Jim Sommers, 77 years, of Boron CA, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones.
Jim was born in Los Angeles, California in 1946 to Rudolph and Doris Sommers, and moved to Boron at a young age. He graduated from Boron High School in 1964, attended Bakersfield Junior College for a year before joining the United States Marine Corps. He received a Purple Heart for acts of courage and bravery during the Vietnam War.
Jim lived and worked in the Boron community for over 60 years, he was a business owner and retired from Rio Tinto Mine/formerly US Borax. He was known to be a strong advocate for veterans and served on many local and district boards. Late in life he dedicated his time to managing and bartending at the local VFW.
Jim was proceeded in death by his wife Floyette Marie Sommers, and is survived by his daughter Lacey Sommers-Tarca (Justin), son Shawn Bynum (Carrie), granddaughters Jessica Knight (Branden) and Jenna Curly (Ryan), as well as five great grandchildren: Alice, Magnolia, Ferris, Rowan, and Reese. He is also survived by his brother Rick Sommers (Sylvia).
Funeral will be held on Monday 03/11/24 at 2:00pm at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin, CA.
